Your experience
Your volunteer experience begins when we meet you on arrival, usually at Phnom Penh Airport. A 10-day relaxed orientation period will be followed by 11 weeks of teaching, including a one-week break which will generally coincide with a Cambodian festival.
For the benefit of the school and our students, we accept volunteers for three months and only on our specific group starting dates.
Requirements
-
Cultural sensitivity and respect.
-
Fluent spoken English (all nationalities welcome).
Teaching experience and/or qualifications are an advantage, but are not required because all volunteers will receive two days of teaching orientation to help them get started.
Please contact us if you would like information on TEFL & CELTA courses offered in south east Asia.
Cost
-
There is no cost to join our program. No application fee, no registration fee, no participation fee.
-
If you choose to live in the volunteer house, it will cost US$850 (payable on arrival), which covers your accommodation, meals (except on Cambodian public holidays), and house facilities such as WIFI and cable TV for the length of each semester.
This fee also covers the costs of running the volunteer program and improvements to the house. If there are less volunteers than expected, you won't have to pay more, and if there are more volunteers than expected, the extra money will be added to the money raised by the school. For detail about the cost of living at the house, please look at our approximate cost breakdown.
- If you choose to live independently, you pay no fee to us.
- All volunteers will need to pay their own expenses such as international flights, visa application and extension, daily personal
expenses snacks/entertainment, day to day transportation (tuk tuks and moto taxis),
telephone, immunizations, provincial travel etc.
- Personal Insurance with medical evacuation is highly recommended (available for about US$160 for three months from World Nomads)
- You will need to obtain a US$25 Business visa (E-Type or 'normal') on arrival. This visa can be obtained either at land border crossings, or at either Siem Reap or Phnom Penh International airports. The Tourist visa cannot extended for the required three months. Upon successful confirmation of your placement, we will issue you a letter to present to assist in obtaining the correct visa. We have not had a volunteer be refused the correct visa when using our placement letter.
- During the orientation volunteers will have the opportunity to visit one of the CRDT projects in provincial Cambodia. The cost of this excursion ( of approximately 4 days ) is around $100 to cover accommodation, meals and transportation and is in addition to all other costs.
Living Arrangements
-
If you choose to live in the volunteer house, you will share a bedroom with an en suite (see photo below) with one other volunteer in a house with up to 14 volunteers.
-
The volunteer house is about ten minutes walk from the school and we have bicycles to use to get around town.
-
There are fans but no air conditioning. There are no hot showers in the house.
-
Bedrooms are lockable and secure.
-
Breakfast, a cooked lunch and dinner (both usually rice based dishes) are prepared by our Cambodian cook. Vegetarian food is simply the standard meal served with tofu, beans or egg instead of meat. We can cater for vegans and allergies.
-
You are welcome to live and eat independently in separate accommodation, and we can help you find the right place if you need our assistance. Contact us for more information on the types of accommodation we can arrange for you.

Teaching Program
-
You will teach conversational English courses designed to create an informal learning environment with small groups (maximum of 14 students per class) and fun topics. There is no focus on reading, writing or grammar.
-
Courses are part-time and each group of students takes a one-hour class each day from Monday to Friday for 10 weeks.
-
You may also teach one-to-one conversational tutoring classes, depending on our schedule.
-
You will teach up to five hours per day from Monday to Friday. Most volunteers also spend time preparing their classes.
-
You will most likely teach from 6:00am to 8:00am, then have a break during the day before teaching two hours between 4:00pm and 8:00pm. These hours reflect the times students are able to study English in between work, family commitments and other studies.
-
There are course books for Levels 1 to 10 with general topics for conversation and activities, teacher guides for some courses, and we also have a range of extra materials. The teachers role is to help with pronunciation of the new words and their use in everyday English conversation. See a sample lesson
-
Students range from 13 to about 40 years of age, and sometimes above, but are typically secondary school and university students.
-
Students pay US$40 per semester per course, about one-quarter of the cost of similar courses in Phnom Penh.
-
All students have at least a basic understanding of English, but all lack practice in speaking and listening with foreigners. Building confidence is our goal!
- For more information about our holiday please see yearly calendar. Please also be aware that this calendar can be changed without prior notice.
