Volunteer In Cambodia

Your experience

Your volunteer experience begins when we meet you on arrival, usually at Phnom Penh Airport. A 10-day relaxed orientation period will be followed by 11 weeks of teaching, including a one-week break which will generally coincide with a Cambodian festival.

For the benefit of the school and our students, we accept volunteers for three months and on our specific group starting dates only.

Requirements

  • Cultural sensitivity and respect.

  • Fluent spoken English (all nationalities welcome).

Teaching experience and/or qualifications are an advantage, but are not required because all volunteers will receive two days of teaching orientation, which includes some training sessions.

If you want to be a qualified TEFL teacher, you can do a four-week internationally-accredited TEFL certificate course conducted by the school (CamTEFL) before volunteering. In our experience, volunteers give themselves the best opportunity to enjoy their teaching if they have the skills and confidence that comes from training. CamTEFL courses are scheduled to fit with volunteering at the school, are industry standard courses of 120 hours duration, and have experienced and qualified trainers. The cost is US$1450. For more details, visit www.camtefl.org.

Cost

  • There is no cost for volunteering at the school.

  • If you choose to live in the volunteer house, it will cost US$850 (payable on arrival), which covers your accommodation and meals (except on school holidays) for three months.

  • This fee also covers the costs of running the volunteer program and improvements to the house. If there are less volunteers than expected, you won't have to pay more, and if there are more volunteers than expected, the extra money will be added to the money raised by the school.

  • You need to pay for your airfare, insurance (available for about US$160 for three months from World Nomads), Business (E) visa (about US$100 total), travel and personal expenses.

  • You need to get a Business (E) visa (not a Tourist (T) visa as they can't be extended for the required three months) on arrival using a letter provided by us. Visas are easy to get, and further information will be given after your application is confirmed.

Living

  • If you choose to live in the volunteer house, you will share a bedroom with an ensuite (see photo below) with one other volunteer in a house with up to 14 volunteers.

  • The volunteer house is about ten minutes walk from the school and we have bicycles to use to get around.

  • There are fans but no air conditioning. There are no hot showers in the house.

  • Bedrooms are lockable and secure.

  • Breakfast, a cooked lunch and dinner (both usually rice) are prepared by our Cambodian cook. Vegetarian food is simply the standard meal served without the meat.

  • You are welcome to live and eat independently in separate accommodation if you wish to organise this.

  • If you are taking a CamTEFL course before volunteering, you will need to live and eat independently in separate accommodation while you are doing the course, and you can then move to the volunteer house to begin volunteering at the school.

Teaching

  • You will teach conversational English courses designed to create an informal learning environment with small groups (maximum of 14 students) and fun topics. There is no focus on reading, writing or grammar.

  • Courses are part-time and each group of students takes a one-hour class each day from Monday to Friday for 10 weeks.

  • You may also teach one-to-one conversational tutoring classes, depending on our schedule.

  • You will teach up to five hours per day from Monday to Friday. Most volunteers also spend time preparing their classes.

  • You will most likely teach from 6:00am to 8:00am, then have a break during the day before teaching two hours between 4:00pm and 8:00pm. These hours reflect that students like to study English before and after going to work or high school/university.

  • There are course books for Levels 1 to 10 with general topics for conversation and activities, teacher guides for some courses, and we also have a range of extra materials.

  • Students range from 13 to about 40 years of age, but are typically existing secondary school and university students.

  • Students pay US$40 per semester per course, about one-third of the cost of similar courses in Phnom Penh.

  • All students have at least a basic understanding of English, but all lack practise in speaking and listening with foreigners.
